According to 13th century legend, the Tarasque was a monster who terrorized a French town until a saint was called in to deal with the problem. Unlike most of these stories, however, St. Martha tamed the Tarasque rather than slaughtering it. (Sadly, in some versions the Tarasque was then killed by the townsfolk anyway, but I prefer to imagine it living happily ever after with Martha.)
