Beyond Pomegranate & Thorns A Collection of Stories, Poems, & Art by Anne E.G. Nydam Everyone’s heard of fairy-tale endings, but I’ve been imagining stories with fairy-tale beginnings… In stories, poems, and art I explore and re-envision stories from classical Greek mythology, traditional European fairy tales, and a variety of other myths, legends, and folklore. • The Mirror on the Wall reflects on beauty • The Shades watch Persephone’s arrival in Hades • Thirteen fairies explain the gifts they bestow on a princess • Cain and Abel chase each other through cycles of reincarnation • It takes a flock to raise a Baba Yaga • Medusa sings to her snakes • Jorinde remembers her time as a nightingale • The Dish and the Spoon send postcards from their honeymoon • Pandora’s box contains another surprise • Sleeping Beauty dreams • And much more… In 19 short stories, more than 21 evocative poems, and scores of whimsical relief block prints, this enchanted collection spins gold from the magical tales we think we know. Once upon a time... Paperback, full color 190 pages, 7.5x9.25 inches $20 If you have questions or to place an order |
Praise for Beyond Pomegranate & Thorns
I would stand on a busy street-corner proclaiming the importance of this book to every passer-by. Anne E.G. Nydam's Beyond Pomegranate and Thorns is rich, silly, wise, beautiful, humane, funny, and genuinely important... Nydam understands the challenges and complexities of being human. And, unlike so many of us, she has faith and hope that we can lift each other up and that our love can encompass all living things and spirits, not just human beings. I could not read this book without having my heart cracked open with hope, humor and real belief that maybe we're not only worth saving, but that we can save each other, too. One of my favorite authors and visual artists, and my favorite of her books.

I received this book as a gift from a good friend who knows I very much value the metaphors in myths and fairy tales. Nydam's short stories are charming, and all involve much creative thought. She often strikes a note that brings the witchery down to earth by introducing poetic justice, and putting the tale in perspective. She does this by subtly shifting the metaphors of the original tales in a direction that softens or balances out the cruelty or too muchness of the original. I find those powerful little surprises delightful to discover.
